TYLER
None of this made any fucking sense.
Winter had been pregnant. Had my father known? Did Mara know? She didn't seem surprised at the reveal, when I saw Winter and figured out that Dahlia had to have been mine, until she shacked up with this Duncan guy right after I left, or she had been cheating on me.
But no. Dahlia had my hair, and my eyes. Neither Duncan nor Winter had eyes like mine.
She hadn't denied that the baby wasn't his, either. He knew it wasn't his. She wasn't lying to him. She knew it was mine and she had been pregnant when my father took me away and holy shit I'm a father.
It only seemed logical that I take Dahlia with me, once I found out. We were meant to live out in the open, in the wild, hunting and travelling with our own kind. Not cooped up in a house with shit like central heating, so claustrophobic sometimes I felt like I could hardly breathe. What was Winter feeding her? Probably cooked meals full of chemicals and crap that humans liked to eat instead of natural, fresh meat and whatever grew on bushes and trees.
It was insane! Dahlia wouldn't learn to shift at all unless she was around her own kind. That was the point. The children either figured out how to shift or they froze to death. She would never need to if she was being coddled by Winter and this whipped fucking neutered bear she stank of. The scent of him still stung my nose as Mara, Wallace, and I hauled our supplies back to the dome so that everyone could eat.
I had never experienced such a swift change of emotions so quickly. Anger, confusion, surprise, rage, confusion again.
...My father had to have known, hadn't he? Why else would he forbid me to go to Nome? It was known that I was a white bear, if the police were still looking for me they would have seen me come in with the rest of the clan.
I didn't understand. My mind was racing.
I set the crates down once we returned to the dome and wolfed down two large fresh fish whole on my own, before I grabbed Mara's arm tightly and met her eyes. "We need to talk," I demanded. She nodded, like she expected this, and followed me back outside.
"What the actual fuck is going on?"
Mara sighed. "Look," she said, and fixed me with a steely gaze. "Whatever shit went down between you and your father when your mother died, it wasn't on either of you. He thought you left because you didn't want to be with the clan anymore. When he heard you were shacking up in human towns and making a nuisance of yourself, he realized you would be better off running with us, so he came to get you. That's the whole story."
"That's not the whole story," I replied, glaring at her. "You didn't seem surprised to see Winter with my fucking baby in her arms.
